Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup is set to launch in just two months. While many features have already leaked, one key mystery remains - one that could seriously impact users’ upgrade decisions.

Which iPhone 17 models will support ProMotion?

In 2022, Apple introduced a major screen upgrade for certain iPhones - ProMotion technology with a 120Hz refresh rate and the debut of the always-on display. For three consecutive years, this feature remained exclusive to the Pro models.

However, recent leaks suggest this may change with the iPhone 17 lineup.

Analyst Ross Young, known for accurate display predictions, has stated that all iPhone 17 models will feature LTPO screens with 120Hz refresh rates, meaning ProMotion could finally come to all models.

Yet, a conflicting source from Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo claims that while the 120Hz refresh rate will be present, it won’t be true ProMotion - raising questions about feature limitations.

For users of current Pro models considering the iPhone 17 Air, the absence of ProMotion could be a deal-breaker.

A decisive detail before Apple’s September launch

The presence or absence of ProMotion is one of the biggest remaining unknowns before Apple’s September event. For those weighing an upgrade, it could tip the scales toward or away from certain models.

Without ProMotion, downgrading from a Pro to the Air would be hard to justify, even with compromises in battery life and camera capabilities. For some, ProMotion is an essential feature.

On the other hand, if the iPhone 17 Air does get ProMotion, its ultra-thin design and futuristic feel may become the most compelling reason for Pro users to switch - more than ever before.

New colors and design for the iPhone 17 Air

A recent report from MacRumors outlines possible color changes. The iPhone 16/16 Plus currently comes in ultramarine, teal, pink, white, and black. The iPhone 17 is rumored to introduce new purple and green options, replacing teal and ultramarine. However, only one of these new colors might make it to the final lineup.

For the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, changes in material may bring new colors. Apple is expected to move from titanium to aluminum frames with aluminum-glass rear designs. A new light blue shade is also being considered.

In a Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman confirmed this year’s iPhone would be a major design overhaul compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Changes include a super-slim “iPhone 17 Air” and redesigned backs and camera systems for the Pro models. Gurman used quotation marks around “Air,” suggesting it may not be the final product name.

Gurman also mentioned that this year’s updates are stepping stones toward 2026, when Apple aims to reduce the size of Dynamic Island, get closer to a true full-front display, and potentially launch its first foldable iPhone.

By 2027, Apple is expected to revamp the entire Pro lineup to mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series this September. The new models will include: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, each featuring notable upgrades - especially in the Pro series.
