Vietnam’s squad for the Malaysia match features few new names.

The recently announced squad for Vietnam’s upcoming clash with Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers comes with few surprises. Coach Kim Sang Sik has only introduced two new faces: Nguyen Cong Phuong and Cao Pendant Quang Vinh.

This decision reflects the Korean coach’s cautious approach, especially against a Malaysian side considered the biggest unknown since he took charge of the Vietnamese national team.

Given the short preparation window and the absence of a friendly match - unlike the March training camp - his conservative strategy appears justified.

New challenges for Kim Sang Sik

Despite winning their last two matches following the ASEAN Cup victory - against weaker sides Cambodia (2-1) and Laos (5-0) - Vietnam still revealed several shortcomings in their gameplay.

While the team dominated possession under coach Kim Sang Sik, they struggled with finishing, particularly in set pieces and final attacking sequences.

Defensive lapses also remain a concern. In the Cambodia match, Vietnam conceded from a simple play that stemmed from a lack of focus among the center-backs and goalkeeper.

Similarly, although they kept a clean sheet against Laos, the backline was repeatedly challenged, with issues arising from poor coordination between the full-backs and center-backs when defending quick counterattacks.

These recurring problems highlight the urgent need for tactical adjustments. Coach Kim must strengthen the defensive structure and improve the team’s transition from defense to attack.

Such improvements are essential if Vietnam hopes to secure a win at Bukit Jalil against a physically strong, fast Malaysian team bolstered by naturalized players.

If Vietnam can address these weaknesses - even without significant roster changes - the experience of seasoned veterans, combined with the high-quality additions of Cong Phuong and Cao Pendant Quang Vinh, could provide the edge needed to overcome the Malaysian challenge.
