Hanoi: Major fake electric motorbike ring uncovered

On June 16, the Economic Police Division (Team 6) of Hanoi Police, in coordination with the Department of Market Development and Management under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, conducted simultaneous inspections at three electric motorbike businesses in Hanoi and Bac Ninh.

Authorities uncovered serious violations related to the origin and authenticity of the products. Expanding the investigation, police searched a manufacturing facility in Bac Giang Province, where they seized over 100 electric motorbikes lacking legal invoices or documentation, along with equipment used in the production of counterfeit goods. The estimated value of the seized inventory exceeded USD 39,000.

Ringleader identified and criminal case filed

The Economic Police Division has filed criminal charges for the illegal production and sale of counterfeit electric vehicles, and three suspects have been formally indicted.

The mastermind of the operation was identified as N.V.D, residing in Bac Ninh. Preliminary findings revealed that N.V.D and accomplices used sophisticated methods to legalize the fake products, including forging documents, labels, and counterfeit anti-fraud stamps.

After producing the motorbikes in Bac Giang, N.V.D distributed them to retail outlets in Hanoi, including a store operated by L.V.K, using fabricated paperwork to legitimize the products.

Since early 2025, the group has trafficked hundreds of fake electric motorbikes into the market, earning illicit profits of USD 120 to USD 160 per vehicle.

Consumer safety at risk

These counterfeit vehicles not only defraud buyers but also pose serious safety risks. Substandard battery systems used in these bikes increase the danger of fire and malfunction due to non-compliance with safety standards.

The police are continuing to expand the investigation, identify additional suspects, and trace distributed counterfeit vehicles to prevent further harm.

The Economic Police Division strongly advises consumers not to purchase or use electric motorbikes lacking verifiable origin, proper documentation, or official labeling. Any suspicious activities related to counterfeit vehicle sales should be promptly reported to local authorities.
