Founded in September 1919, VGIK is one of the largest and oldest film schools in the world.
Over the past five decades, more than 140 Vietnamese students have studied at VGIK, many of whom have become notable figures in Vietnam’s film industry.
In recognition of the school’s significant role in training generations of Vietnamese film professionals and fostering friendly cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation, the President of Vietnam awarded VGIK the Friendship Order in 2009.
Madame Ngo Phuong Ly expressed deep emotion upon visiting the school, which holds a rich legacy and major significance in the world of cinema. It was especially meaningful as her late father, Associate Professor Dr. and People’s Artist Ngo Manh Lan, studied there and was considered an outstanding student.
Many acclaimed Vietnamese filmmakers such as Bui Dinh Hac, Nguyen Khac Loi, and Nguyen Thi Hong Ngat are also alumni of VGIK.
Madame Ngo Phuong Ly expressed her hope that the two countries would continue to exchange students and collaborate on film productions, allowing for shared experiences and deeper artistic connection.

The V.I. Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute, another stop on her visit, is one of Russia’s leading fine arts universities. It is the successor of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, established in 1843.
The institute is known for its training of artists and theorists across disciplines such as painting, graphics, sculpture, architecture, and art history.
Madame Ngo Phuong Ly emphasized that the institute is not only the cradle of Russia’s artistic talent but also a place where many Vietnamese artists have found inspiration and development.
Renowned names in Vietnamese fine arts, such as painters Tran Luu Hau, Phung Quoc Tri, Nguyen Quang Vinh, Nguyen Phuoc Sanh, and sculptor Dao Chau Hai, all trained at this institution.
On this occasion, Madame Ngo Phuong Ly also attended the “Colors of Vietnam - Russia” art exhibition, which featured works by Vietnamese and Russian artists.
