Binh A Pagoda was completely destroyed by wartime bombings in 1963.
The new pagoda was rebuilt in 1994 on a 1,200-square-meter area. After several restoration phases, by 2018, the pagoda grounds expanded to approximately 13,000 square meters.
Binh A Pagoda showcases architectural influences from Hue’s Buddhist tradition blended with the cultural essence of Kinh Bac.
The courtyard is thoughtfully landscaped to provide visitors and Buddhist devotees a serene and peaceful experience.
Standing prominently within the pagoda grounds is the majestic Amitabha Buddha statue, crafted from natural green stone. The statue stands 32 meters tall (measured from the pedestal to the top of the Buddha’s head) and weighs nearly 3,000 tons. It holds the record for the largest natural green stone Amitabha Buddha statue in Vietnam, recognized by the Vietnam Records Organization in 2018.
The statue comprises two main parts: the pedestal and the sacred image, forming a harmonious and unified whole. The Buddha sits atop a triple-layer lotus pedestal, symbolizing purity.
The statue’s face is oval-shaped with half-closed eyes. A protuberance (ushnisha) rises from the top of the head, the hair is curled to the right, and the elongated ears nearly touch the shoulders. The neck is formed with three folds, and the body is draped gracefully in flowing robes, bearing the "Swastika" symbol on the chest.
Construction of the sacred statue began in 2013 and was completed in 2018. Beyond its artistic and spiritual value, the statue conveys a profound message of compassion, moral direction, and peace for the people.
Inside the pedestal, there are two separate floors dedicated to the veneration of ten thousand golden Buddha statues.
Vu Ngoc Quynh, a resident of Nam Dinh City, shared: "I come to Binh A Pagoda seeking peace and tranquility. The quiet atmosphere here relaxes my mind. Standing beneath the giant Amitabha Buddha statue, I feel protected and blessed."
Inside the pedestal, 10,000 gold-plated Buddha statues symbolize the myriad Buddhas.
On either side of the Amitabha Buddha statue are solid white marble statues of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Guan Yin), Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta, and the Four Heavenly Kings.
A depiction of Buddha with his ten great disciples during their journey of teaching is also featured.
