After 58 years of separation, Chu Nghiem, born in 1941, and his daughter, Nguyen Thi Thuy, born in 1967, residing in Bac Giang, were reunited.
“When I received a call from the Cua Nam Ward Police informing me that my daughter was looking for me, I was overwhelmed with emotion. It was one of the happiest days of my life,” Nghiem shared, visibly moved.
He recounted that in mid-December 1968, when his family lived near Hanoi Station, his 20-month-old daughter, Chu Thi Tuyet Mai, went missing while playing at the station. There were no photos and no leads left. There were only fading memories of her calling “Daddy!” and her birthday, the day she vanished remained etched in his mind.
For the last nearly six decades, the family never gave up. They searched tirelessly across the country, posting notices in newspapers and on social media, but to no avail.
Meanwhile, about 60 kilometers from Hanoi, in Khanh Van Village in BacGiang province,
Thuy lived with a lingering desire to uncover her roots.
Her only memory was a faint recollection of being adopted by a family after getting lost at Hanoi Station in mid-December 1968. In March 2025, she read in the media about a man named Chu Nghiem searching for his lost daughter, with details that matched her story.
Guided by a gut feeling, on March 24, she took a bus to Hanoi and wandered around the station area, clinging to a sliver of hope. Fortunately, she encountered a patrol team from Cua Nam Ward Police on duty at the station.
After explaining her situation, she was taken to the police station, where officers assisted in searching for information. Within just 30 minutes of verification, Nghiem and his family arrived at the station to meet Thuy in person.
On April 25, Nghiem announced the DNA test results: Thuy is indeed his biological daughter, the little girl lost in the bustling crowd at Hanoi Station all those years ago.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Huy Quy, Chief of Cua Nam Ward Police, said the police searched for information through the national population and citizen identification database. “We feel incredibly fortunate to have played a role in reuniting Nghiem and Thuy after nearly six decades apart,” he said.
Witnessing the tearful reunion of father and daughter, many people couldn’t hide their emotions. A long, painful chapter closed with a happy ending, made possible by familial love, relentless perseverance, and the dedicated support of compassionate individuals.
