Professor Luong Van Hy, Ph.D., from the University of Toronto, will be among 16 scholars selected to lecture at VNUHCMC as approved by the university’s advisory board. The University of Toronto is Canada’s top institution and ranks among the world’s elite schools.
Professor Hy is a prominent Vietnamese figure abroad with an outstanding academic and professional record. He studied at Petrus Ky School, now Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in HCM City. He graduated with a degree in Anthropology and Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley (US) in 1974, and earned a PhD in Anthropology from Harvard University (USA) in 1981.
Hy taught at various US universities. Since the 1990s, he has been a professor and head of the Anthropology Department at the University of Toronto.
In 2006, VNUHCMC awarded him the title of “Honorary Professor” and a badge of recognition. This was the first time that a Vietnamese university conferred the “Honorary Professor” title to acknowledge the significant contributions of overseas Vietnamese professors to the development of Vietnam’s education system.
Since 1987, Professor Hy has frequently returned to Vietnam, conducting numerous research projects in anthropology, sociology, and linguistics. His work has made substantial contributions to Vietnam’s academic landscape, particularly at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in HCM City.
Associate Professor Vu Hai Quan, Director of VNUHCMC, said the fields of social sciences and humanities currently lack leading experts. Hy is a top expert in anthropology and social sciences and humanities who has returned to Vietnam many times, teaching, mentoring research, and participating in many activities, but these were individual efforts.
“Based on the proposal from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, we aim to formalize Professor Luong Van Hy’s involvement in teaching and researching to ensure mutual comfort in our collaboration,” Quan said.
In addition to Professor Luong Van Hy, several other researchers will serve as visiting lecturers at VNUHCMC.
These include Pham Hy Hieu, who graduated with honors in Computer Science from Stanford University (2011-2015, USA) and received the Ben Wegbreit Award for the best honors thesis, and now is a technical staff member at xAI (USA); Prof Pham Cong Kha from the Tokyo University of Electro-Communications (Japan); Associate Professor Dinh Ngoc Thach from the National School of Decorative Arts and Crafts (France); Tran Anh Thong from the Australian National University; and Professor Ngo Chi Hien from the University of Western Australia.
