Uncommon yet mesmerizing frost and ice have coated high mountain peaks across northern provinces of Cao Bang, Yen Bai, and Lao Cai, as temperatures plunged below 0°C due to an intensified cold front.

Stunning frost on northern peaks

The cold air sweeping across northern Vietnam has caused a significant drop in temperatures, especially in high-altitude areas, leading to the formation of frost.

At Ta Xua Peak in Yen Bai, frost first appeared on the afternoon of January 11, drawing eager mountaineers and tourists to witness the rare spectacle.

By early January 12, frost had also covered the Phja Oac Peak in Cao Bang (elevation 1,931 meters) and Lao Than Peak in Lao Cai (elevation 2,826 meters). Temperatures in these areas dropped below freezing, accompanied by high humidity, frost, and light drizzle. The frost created a thin layer of ice on trees, rocks, and the ground, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the weather in the northwestern region is expected to remain extremely cold in the coming days, with freezing temperatures and frost likely in mountainous areas.
