Vietnam’s women’s futsal team got off to a positive start in the AFC Women’s Futsal Championship 2025, defeating Hong Kong (China) 5-3 in a tense and challenging opener.

Despite earning three points, head coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang expressed concern about the team’s performance and called for urgent improvements ahead of tougher matches.

Ranked higher than their opponents, Vietnam struggled with finishing and defensive coordination throughout the game. Coach Hoang admitted the opening match was far from smooth. “It was a really difficult game for us. The first match of any tournament is always a big challenge. Although we appreciate the players’ fighting spirit, there are many technical aspects we must improve,” he said.

Vietnam took the lead in the 13th minute when Thanh Ngan forced an own goal from the opposition. Just a minute later, she added her name to the scoresheet with a precise strike.

Hong Kong pulled one back through Wu Choi Yiu, but Thu Xuan restored Vietnam’s cushion just before the halftime whistle to make it 3-1.

However, Vietnam lost momentum early in the second half, allowing Hong Kong to equalize 3-3 after a goal by Poon Ka Ka. Coach Hoang noted this as a recurring issue: “We haven’t started either half with the right rhythm. After conceding the equalizer, we reminded the players to stay focused and adapt tactically on the court.”

In the final stretch, Vietnam regrouped. Thanh Ngan scored again in the 32nd minute, followed by a goal from Nguyet Vi to seal a hard-fought 5-3 victory.

“The coaching staff will review the match video to analyze what went wrong and make necessary adjustments,” said coach Hoang. “We must start better and maintain concentration during key phases of the game.”

With this win, Vietnam temporarily leads Group B, edging out Iran on goal difference. Iran also earned three points with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Philippines in their opener.

Vietnam’s next match will be against the Philippines at 10:00 AM on May 9. A win would boost their chances of advancing in the tournament and offer a valuable opportunity to show tactical improvements.
