The United States remains one of Vietnam’s key export markets.

The online negotiation took place at 9:00 PM on June 19 (Vietnam time) between Minister Nguyen Hong Dien, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

The ministers exchanged views on solutions and strategic approaches to address the key outstanding issues in the negotiations.

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien welcomed the proposals presented by Secretary Lutnick and Ambassador Greer to advance the negotiation process. He also reiterated Vietnam’s request that the United States consider key areas of interest, including countervailing tariff policies and access for key Vietnamese export groups.

He emphasized Vietnam’s position on working collaboratively with the U.S. to develop practical and harmonized rules of origin that reflect the unique characteristics of global supply chains. These rules should ensure non-discrimination and facilitate business for companies from both countries.

The U.S. officials commended Vietnam’s constructive efforts and goodwill in addressing U.S. concerns. They noted that such actions provide a strong basis for the U.S. to consider reciprocal tariff policies that align with Vietnam’s specific conditions and context.

Both Secretary Lutnick and Ambassador Greer affirmed the U.S. government’s commitment and strong desire to reach an agreement that benefits both nations.

Ambassador Greer added that the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) will soon finalize and send the necessary documentation to Vietnam, enabling both sides to focus on discussions that will lead to a mutually beneficial outcome.
