Ly Hai’s action-comedy takes the lead, while Victor Vu’s thriller closes the gap in major cities.
After a five-day holiday weekend, the cinematic duel between two major Vietnamese films - Detective Kien: The Headless Horror by Victor Vu and Face Off 8: Vong tay nang by Ly Hai - has delivered clear box office results.

Despite facing fierce competition and mixed critical reception, Face Off 8 managed to top the charts during the break, earning VND 51.5 billion (approximately USD 2.03 million).
Including early preview sales, its total revenue has surpassed VND 150 billion (around USD 5.91 million). While the film’s performance lags behind last year’s Face Off 7, it still emerged as the holiday’s top earner.

In second place, Detective Kien: The Headless Horror closed the gap with VND 48.6 billion (USD 1.87 million) over the same period, despite having 800 fewer screenings than its rival.
The number of tickets sold for both films was nearly identical, with Detective Kien recording 538,447 admissions.
As of 6:00 AM on May 5, Box Office Vietnam reported the film had grossed VND 131 billion (USD 5.16 million) after 10 days in theaters.

According to Box Office Vietnam, Detective Kien outperformed Face Off 8 in Vietnam’s two largest cities. However, Ly Hai’s film proved more popular in provincial markets, particularly in the Mekong Delta and other southern regions, helping it maintain a higher overall gross.
Meanwhile, Marvel Studios’ Hollywood blockbuster Thunderbolts premiered on April 30 but fell well short of its Vietnamese competitors, landing in third place with just VND 9.5 billion (USD 373,000) from 83,792 admissions. Its total earnings stand at only VND 16 billion (USD 628,000).
The animated film Crayon Shin-chan: Shrouded in Mystery! The Flowers of Tenkasu Academy ranked fourth with VND 4.3 billion (USD 169,000). Rounding out the top five was Dia dao, which saw its earnings fall to VND 3.1 billion (USD 122,000) over the weekend, though its cumulative gross has exceeded VND 170 billion (USD 6.67 million).
