The 18+ horror film Under the lake, directed by Tran Huu Tan, unexpectedly shot to the number one spot at the box office upon release.

According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam, the film grossed approximately USD 574,000 in its opening weekend, dethroning the 44th installment of Doraemon, which had previously dominated the local market.

Over the same weekend, Doraemon Movie 44: Nobita and the adventure into the world of paintings dropped to second place, earning around USD 538,000 with nearly 141,000 tickets sold. However, the animated movie has already surpassed the USD 5.5 million mark in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise's blockbuster Mission: Impossible 8 held steady at number three, adding USD 295,000 to its earnings over the weekend. This brings its total revenue in Vietnam to approximately USD 1.46 million after ten days in theaters.

Coming in fourth was the Vietnamese animated film The adventure of the cricket in the muddy village, which brought in USD 185,000. The film has now earned USD 595,000 in total - an impressive figure for a local animated production competing against foreign blockbusters.

Notably, it even outperformed Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch in both ranking and revenue. The action film Ballerina from the John Wick universe, released on June 6, ranked sixth with an opening weekend of USD 126,000.

This coming weekend promises more excitement at the box office. The highly anticipated live-action version of How to train your dragon, a film that once swept Vietnamese theaters in animated form, will premiere with both subtitled and dubbed versions.

The dubbed release will feature the voice of "big brother" Hung Huynh. Additionally, the Korean superhero comedy-action film The ultimate five, starring top stars Yoo Ah In, Ahn Jae Hong, Park Jin Young, and Ra Mi Ran, is also set to hit theaters, promising a dynamic week ahead.
