At 8 PM (Vietnam time) today, General Secretary To Lam held a phone conversation with President Donald Trump to discuss Vietnam-US relations and ongoing negotiations over reciprocal trade tariffs.
The two leaders expressed their satisfaction with the strong and positive development of the bilateral relationship.
They welcomed the conclusion of negotiations between their respective delegations on the Joint Vietnam-US Statement regarding a Framework for Fair and Reciprocal Trade Agreements.
President Trump praised Vietnam’s commitment to granting preferential market access to US goods, particularly large-displacement automobiles.
He confirmed that the US would significantly reduce reciprocal tariffs on many Vietnamese export items and pledged to continue working with Vietnam to resolve existing trade issues - especially in areas prioritized by both nations.

General Secretary To Lam urged the US to officially recognize Vietnam as a market economy and to lift export restrictions on certain high-tech products.
The two leaders also discussed major directions and initiatives to enhance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the coming years.
They agreed to increase high-level exchanges, expand cooperation across various sectors - especially in key and breakthrough areas such as science and high technology - and promote trade and investment.
On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam reiterated his invitation for President Donald Trump and the First Lady to visit Vietnam and expressed his hope to meet President Trump again soon.
President Trump sincerely thanked General Secretary To Lam for the invitation and expressed his desire to meet again in the near future.
