SCMP, the long-standing and well-known publication based in Hong Kong (China), has recently named Ta Van in Sa Pa one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Asia.

In his article, writer Tim Pile described how “hilltop villages precariously perched on mountain slopes across Asia often share breathtaking natural scenery, captivating vistas, and a deep-rooted tradition of ancient agricultural techniques.”

“Rice is cultivated on steep terraced fields, and houses are built to withstand harsh weather conditions. Indigenous traditions and culture remain strong and vibrant, far removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life,” Pile wrote.

Whether reached by winding mountain roads, forest trails, or cable cars, the villages featured in the list are all considered ideal destinations for travelers seeking peace, rejuvenation, and a deeper connection to both heritage and landscape.

Located about 12 kilometers from Sa Pa town (Lao Cai province), Ta Van is described as a “picture-perfect village” tucked into a lush green valley. It is home to the Giay and H’mong ethnic communities.

Traditional stilt houses are scattered among terraced rice fields, surrounded by babbling streams and whispering bamboo forests.

Unlike the bustling, tourist-heavy Cat Cat Village in central Sa Pa, Ta Van has preserved its tranquil rhythm of life. Visitors can rent a motorbike to explore the area or simply follow forest paths at dawn to witness the golden light bathing the valley.

In addition to Ta Van, SCMP also highlighted other standout destinations on its list, including Mae Kampong (Thailand), Hundar (India), Ella (Sri Lanka), Huangling (China), and Shirakawa (Japan).
