The Vietnamese women’s futsal team saw their 2025 AFC Women’s Futsal Championship campaign come to an end in the quarterfinals after a hard-fought 0-2 loss to powerhouse Japan.

The match began with early drama, as Vietnam conceded in the 4th minute when Phuong Anh accidentally scored an own goal while trying to block a shot from Kyoka. This unfortunate moment set the tone for a first half dominated by Japan’s pressing and possession.

Despite being under constant pressure, goalkeeper Thuy Linh delivered an outstanding performance with multiple crucial saves that kept Vietnam in the game. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s counter-attacks offered glimpses of hope. Notable efforts came from Nguyet Vy’s long-range attempt and Van Anh’s pressing, which caused brief concern for the Japanese defense.

In the second half, Japan doubled their lead in the 24th minute through Ryo Egawa, who finished a close-range opportunity. Vietnam switched to power-play tactics in the closing stages, with veteran Tran Thi Thuy Trang brought on to bolster the attack. However, Japan's compact defense and goalkeeper Nene ensured there was no way back.

Vietnam’s determined performance, although not enough to produce an upset, earned praise for its fighting spirit and tactical discipline. The match concluded 0-2, marking Vietnam’s exit from the tournament at the quarterfinal stage.

This experience adds valuable lessons for coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang and his players, especially in preparation for future international campaigns.
